Provocative protege cast3/1/2023 Put to the test, though, William's much-vaunted virtue proves pliable, and ultimately Jeff is forced to wrestle with questions of loyalty as he thrashes out whether and how to avert a potentially horrific miscarriage of justice. Rounding out the quartet of interlocked characters is William (Darian Dauchan), Jeff's African-American boss, who's determined to inspire his laid-back protege with his own pulled-up-by-the-bootstraps example. After Jeff, just making conversation, blabs about Bill's covert agenda in visiting the apartment upstairs, Prince shows us Dawn's vulnerable, volatile private side. The doll-like impression she conveys initially (reminiscent of those TV cop shows whose model-like leads could make good money on the runway) is tempered by an authoritative voice and no-nonsense demeanor. Prince is touching as a would-be tough cookie who's only human (and a woman to boot). "I think I'm a sex addict," he adds glibly, not at all contrite. "All right, I'm busted," he concedes - and flashes a slick grin - when Dawn, his worshipful paramour, catches him making sexual house calls while ostensibly on the job. He tends to blurt out whatever pops into his head, whether it's a pornographic fantasy "of being interrogated by all these lady cops" or an abrupt declaration of love to the real-life rookie, Dawn (Lori Prince), on whom he has a crush.ĭawn's partner, Bill (Scott Decker), a self-styled supercop, is set up as Jeff's polar opposite: a guy with all the answers and angles and always a ready excuse. It's just that he doesn't know how to play the game (any game) he's finesse-free and utterly without guile. Jeff is actually (as he'd be the first to tell you) a pretty funny guy, in his own understated way. WELLFLEET - Jeff, the stalled-out security guard who's the central character in Kenneth Lonergan's cleverly constructed 2000 play "Lobby Hero," isn't entirely passive and dopey, though Alexander Pascal astutely plays him with a concave stance and a convincing mask of denseness.
